Gonzalo Rojas fue un destacado escritor, al punto que en 1992 fue galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile. Por eso, hoy cobra especial relevancia su arribo al mineral El Orito en 1937, cuando laboraba un importante número de trabajadores. Incluso, Rojas ocupó un cargo administrativo y vivió en la Estación Ferroviaria de Vizcachitas. Además, entre los años 1940 y 1943 fue el director de la escuela del pueblo.
El Orito, cuyas minas lograron una interesante producción, fue descubierto en 1801. Su mina principal era La Pilar, situada a 18 leguas de Vallenar y al sur del río El Carmen. Esta, en 1801 llegó a generar 1.600 quintales de cobre puro, a un valor de 22.400 pesos de la época.
En las quebradas del cerro de El Orito había lavaderos de oro, de los cuales se sacaba algún provecho en las estaciones de lluvia, hallándose a veces pepitas de 5 a 6 tomines. De ahí viene su nombre, a pesar de ser un mineral de cobre.
